The Services We Put in Place

Bathroom Plumbing: From Upgrades to the Usual Problems

Homeowners in Pensacola are tending toward modern, user-friendly options these days. We see a lot of vessel sinks on the vanity, single-lever faucets and chair-height (ADA) elongated toilets. For the tub and shower area, freestanding tubs are in vogue and many will add a pressure-balanced valve to avoid scalding if the pressure fluctuates elsewhere in the home.

Then there are the more common issues we put right:

On Drain and Sewer Service

You will find tree roots in older lines or non-flushable items like wet wipes to be the usual culprits behind a stoppage. A small rental machine might make a hole but won’t clear everything; our professional equipment is sized and fitted for the pipe. Riptide will follow up with a camera inspection once the cleaning is done to confirm the line is clear and to diagnose any trouble spots, which goes a long way in preventing repeat blockages.

For heavy grease or commercial kitchen lines, hydro jetting is the better option than a mechanical auger. The high-pressure water (1,500–3,500 psi) does a far more thorough job on the pipe walls, though we would not recommend it for fragile, old cast iron.

When an Emergency Arises

An active leak or a total stoppage is what we are called for most often. If there is a risk of flooding, the severity of the situation demands immediate service. We move fast to limit property damage and the health hazards of sewer water. In the case of a leak, stopping the flow is paramount; should a technician be some time away, local emergency services can be of assistance in shutting off the water at the meter to avert major flooding.

Gas Lines (Plumbing and Gas)

Safety is the first order of business with any gas line repair. That means shutting off the gas to the house and doing the proper pressure testing and calling for an inspection as needed. There is a difference between a minor onsite adjustment to a flex line and having to cut into a main service to add a branch. One does not ignore a gas leak; it can build up and ignite, so prompt diagnosis is essential.

Sewer Line Repair and Replacement

If you are faced with constant stoppages and have to make the same repairs time and again, it is a sure sign the sewer line is failing. It is not uncommon for cast iron lines to give way after a number of years underground. In most cases they are better off being replaced in full than subject to constant patching. While a spot replacement will do for a section of PVC that can be mended, with brittle cast iron or where there are several points of failure, a complete swap is the way to go to avoid the added expense and trouble of repeated digs. Riptide puts lines through their paces with camera and hydrostatic testing before putting forward an estimate and carrying out whatever trench work or replacement the job calls for.

Kitchen Plumbing and Fixtures

Today’s kitchen remodels tend to feature undermount sinks and integrated accessory systems like wire racks and cutting boards to make the most of counter space. Riptide takes care of faucet replacement and moving plumbing around as a remodel might dictate, as well as hooking up dishwashers and ice makers (pump or gravity drain). When it comes to disposals, these are sealed units; a jam can be worked out on occasion, but they are not truly repairable over time and have to be replaced if they start to leak.

Water Heaters: Tank vs Tankless

For a home with a high demand for hot water, a tankless unit is a good option as it is virtually unlimited. One should be cautious with electric tankless, however; they can drive up the electric bill and may necessitate expensive upgrades to the electrical system, so we do not recommend them without first verifying capacity. Gas models will see an increase in demand when firing. On the maintenance side, igniters and heat sensors on tankless systems are prone to corrosion and error codes, making correct installation and service a must.

With a conventional tank, brown or rusty water and pooling in the drain pan are telltale signs it is time for a new one. A rotten egg odor usually means the anode rod has worn out, though in some instances that can be replaced.

Wells, Pumps and Sump Systems

Well and sump pumps are generally not worth rebuilding once they fail and need to be replaced. You will often notice low house pressure when a well pump is on its last legs. Sump pumps are a necessity in basements or crawl spaces where groundwater is an issue; we install check valves, alarms, and pump pits to keep the system from cycling continuously or flooding unexpectedly. Proper sizing and regular testing will get more life out of the equipment.

Water Softeners and Filtration

Pensacola homeowners will see the benefit of a softener when hard water leaves mineral deposits on the faucets. Not only does a softener cut down on that buildup to protect valves and fixtures, but whole-home filtration will take care of chlorine and debris to safeguard appliances and cartridges. It is important to have a system that is properly sized and professionally put in; an undersized or substandard unit will restrict flow and leave one wanting. Reverse osmosis can be wasteful of water and is not always the answer for the whole house.

Toilet Repair and Upgrades

We are called in for fill valve and flapper issues more than anything else. There is much to be said for modern 1.28 gpf low-flow toilets with their improved trapway designs; they put older high-gallon models to shame in terms of both water savings and a better flush. Some households find an upgrade to a chair-height or pressurized power-flush model to be a worthwhile improvement in comfort and function.

They showed up within the time they said they would, quickly figured out what was needed, then got to work right away. They did a great job replacing my water heater connections and a broken spigot. Everything worked without any issues and they checked inside my house to ensure nothing else was negatively affected. I would highly recommend them to anyone!
